In the first week of April a group of us are riding from Southland through to Wellington to raise funds and support a great cause...
Recently this special friend has had a rough ride..... his words below
In November 2011 I was diagnosed with a tumour in my pancreas the size of a golf ball, with multiple metastases in my liver. I thought I would not see the year out, but here I am over 5 years later preparing to ride the length of the South Island to raise awareness and money for the treatment that saved my life , but is not available in New Zealand. Each year , around 400 Kiwis are diagnosed with neuro- endocrine cancer ( NETs) , but the public is largely unaware of this, even though it is more common than cancer of the cervix, ovary and brain. A special type of radioisotope which targets the tumours directly is called PRRT and was pioneered in Melbourne where I was lucky enough to recieve treatment. This costs about $50,000 for the first year. This treatment has been shown to prolong life and dramatically improve the qulaity of life of NET patients.
Our goal is to raise money and awareness to establish a centre of excellence for state-of-the art care of neuroendocrine cancer, and to establish PRRT treatment in New Zealand, avaialable to all who need this life saving therapy, along with expert clinical care. With your help and with the fantastic support of our community, friends and families, we can make this happen.
This effort is about Kiwi"s helping other Kiwi's. This goal will not happen if we rely soley on government funding. Please support me and the cause on this important and challenging ride.
a real " Ride for a Reason" , and join the Unicorn Foundation NZ in helping us to make this goal a reality.
